Home field advantage: Kristen Hobbs Cain makes sure former LSU athletes always get a warm welcome back

We see them at the tailgates, in the locker rooms, on the sidelines and up in the suites: former LSU athletes often return to cheer on the Tigers with fervor. But what exactly goes on behind the scenes to make sure a current NFL wide receiver gets from Point A to Point B and later to Point C on gameday? Kristen Hobbs Cain shows up to work, that’s what.

Kristen is the special events and community relations coordinator for the L Club, an organization for former LSU athletes who earned a varsity letter while in school. Her days are hectic and varied, depending on the season and the situation. But they are never dull.

In addition to managing her personal career, Kristen also works around the schedules of husband Nolan Cain, LSU baseball coach and recruiting coordinator, and their two young children Cason and Ryann. We caught up with Kristen recently (we had to jog!) to find out what a typical weekend looked like for this dynamo. From the unveiling of the Skip Bertman statue in the new Legacy Plaza at the baseball field on Friday to the 50-yard line with members of the Gus Kinchen family on Saturday—this weekend in September (typical, she says) was a flurry of activities worthy of a cheer!

Friday, September 13

6:30 a.m.

Wake up, get son Cason dressed, then Nolan brings him to school. I drink coffee, eat breakfast and finish getting ready for work before waking up daughter Ryann.

8:37 a.m.

Drop off Ryann at daycare, then swing by school to drop off Cason’s backpack (because he forgot it).

9:06 a.m.

Finish my script at the LSU Athletics office and gather last-minute items for the Skip Bertman and Legacy Plaza unveiling later today.

10:03 a.m. – 1:27 p.m.

It’s setup time! I coordinate with the delivery company, help with table and chair placement, lay out centerpieces and table linens, and make other adjustments. It is very hands on.

LUNCH

I take a breather, leave the site and get pizza.

Gus Kinchen, his sons Todd and Brian, and his grandsons Hunter and Austin—all members of the L Club—serve as guest captains during the Sept. 14 home game.

2:33 – 3:31 p.m.

Tweak last-minute touches on tables and flowers and review the parking lists for VIP guests.

4 p.m.

Get dressed at the LSU baseball field for the event. Then meet babysitter and switch cars for my children to get picked up from school and daycare.

5:02 p.m.

Final catering check and sound check.

5:30 p.m.

Gates open in Legacy Plaza. I greet guests, assist in the seating of VIP guests, and make sure parking lists are accurate.

6 p.m.

Event begins celebrating Skip Bertman, and his statue is unveiled.

6:35 – 9:38 p.m.

Post-party reception for VIP guests of Skip Bertman, Tiger Athletic Foundation and LSU Athletics. Many former baseball alumni and former coaches are in attendance, and I get a chance to catch up with them.

9:40 – 10:47 p.m.

Event breakdown. I stay and remove centerpieces and table covers. I pick up excess trash and items that needed to be pulled indoors for safekeeping. I set up final times for event rental company to pick up chairs, tables and tents the next morning.

Head Home!

I leave the tailgate to meet the football alumni at the top of Victory Hill.

4:15 p.m.

I make sure they pick up their wristbands.

4:42 p.m.
