Although the work of interior design firm Cullman & Kravis is rooted in tradition, the spaces are anything but conventional or common. Through the skillful mixing of modern art and custom furnishings with antique and vintage elements, the design team has redefined the meaning of traditional in the world of interiors.

The well-established New York City-based firm is celebrating 40 years of creating luxe yet livable spaces with its fourth, and arguably most fashionable, coffee table book published by Rizzoli and simply titled Cullman & Kravis: Interiors.

“The decorative arts teach us that in the language of design, truly new elements rarely appear but new combinations of familiar objects and materials are infinite,” Cullman states in the book. “We obsess about doing something no one’s ever seen before, including us.”

Showcasing nine projects—ranging from an opulent Manhattan apartment to an ethereal New Jersey estate—with an explanation of the team’s approach to each residence, the book gives an exciting look into the design-driven minds of those creating the spaces.

“Time is its own form of perspective. Change? It’s the flip side of constancy. And good decorating needs both,” writes Cullman.

Founded in 1984 by Ellie Cullman and her late partner Hedi Kravis, the firm credits its partners, Lee Cavanaugh, Sarah Ramsey and Alyssa Urban, and the rest of the firm’s staff with contuing to evolve over the years.
