Sometimes the hardest part of a new project comes right at its end. If the new project involves decorating, you might be second-guessing your paint swatches, doubting your fabric choices and wondering how your home will ever come together.

The good news is that this is a common problem. And the better news is that, according to Echelon Designs owner June Jackson, it’s fairly easy to fix by tackling issues before they even arise.

“Many people call me in frustration because they started purchasing items without having a vision of the competed look, and now nothing looks right,” Jackson says. “That’s why it’s so important to develop a vision of the completed look you desire before attempting anything else. Then the rest of the choices are easy and each new decision can build on the last.”

In the room pictured above, Jackson chose the rug as a statement print on which to base the rest of the room. The fabric on the bedspread was designed to coordinate with the rug, and all other choices about fabric or furniture were made with those prints in mind.
