Neil Patrick Harris may be best known for his role as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother, but his recently sold Harlem home packs a much more eclectic punch than his character’s stark bachelor pad.

Harris and his husband David Burtka have owned the home since 2013 and recently sold the 8,000-square-foot property for $7.1 million, a record high price for the neighborhood. It’s no surprise, though, considering the historic, five-story brownstone features 12-foot ceilings, original woodwork and a kitchen fit for a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef like Burtka.

Many celebrities are taking the minimalist route with their interior design, but Harris and Burtka created a maximalist wonderland. Interior designer Trace Lehnhoff and architect Jeffery Povero contrasted the intricate woodwork and classic pieces with modern, quirky touches, like the four monkeys sitting above the bar or the retro-futurist chandelier in the living room. It’s a masterclass on balance—refined, yet playful.
