Budget-friendly tips for upgrading any space
For designer Sarah Cooper of Cabell Cooper Designs, a great space isn’t measured by the amount of money put into it. Rather, it’s about the styling–the little details the speak to the residents’ personal style and their life within the walls. And while these details vary from person to person, of course, Cooper has narrowed down a few go-to tips for upgrading any space without breaking the bank.
Start with the living room, where Cooper says using layers is an easy way to add lushness. “Layering with fabric, accessories and art can provide a well-curated, couture look on a dime,” she says. “Using a sizable rug and placing a zebra or cheetah rug on top would be one way to add dimension of texture. Collections of photography or art displayed on a gallery wall also look polished and curated.”
Now for the fun part: Add personal touches while accessorizing your space to bring your heart into your home. “Accessorize with fresh flowers or an orchid. Accessorize your bookcase with unique findings and decorative objects,” says Cooper. To highlight your personality even more, display your favorite novels or family photos prominently on a bookshelf.
Another of Cooper’s favorite ways to upgrade an everyday living space is by using a bar cart.
“For a portable bar top, use a serving tray and place antique etched glass liquor bottles on it,” she says. “You can also try lacquering a few accent furniture pieces, which gives the furniture a glossy, streamlined look.”
