TBR presents ‘Into the Woods’

Theatre Baton Rouge is putting a twist on favorite fairy tales with its production of Into the Woods, a Tony-winning musical that saw its most recent revival in the 2014 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep.

Directed by Jason Bayle and starring TBR favorite actors as well as a few talented newcomers, the story begins with a tale of the baker and his wife, who long for a child. After a neighboring witch reveals a curse placed upon them, they must travel deep into the forest to procure four magical items before the curse becomes permanent—“the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold.” Along the way, the couple’s adventure tangles with other characters including Cinderella and her prince, Jack and his newly acquired bean, and Little Red Riding Hood and her basket of wolf-enticing goodies.

Although filled with tongue-in cheek musical numbers and whimsical costumes, the PG-13 show is not geared toward young children. If any children need to be looked after while adults enjoy a performance, consider Theatre Baton Rouge’s Parents Night Out program, through which children ages 5 to 15 are watched by volunteers and members of the Young Actors Program.

Into the Woods continues through March 20 with 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. performances. For tickets and dates, call 225-924-6496 or visit theatrebr.org.
